Set largely in the damp sewers and tube stations of London, the story centres on the hapless Richard Mayhew as he finds himself on a quest throughout the London underworld. On his journey he meets Rat-Speakers, an old Earl in his Court, professional assassins, black-robed monks and the Angel, Islington.
