It's My Party archiveA theatrical first, a political first in the UK. A play written about parliament by a sitting politician. Before being elected Green MSP for South Region in 2003, Chris Ballance was an award-winning playwright. 'Water of Life' won an Edinburgh Fringe First in 1990, and 'Viva la Diva' (2001) was runner-up for two London awards. British politics are dominated by those who want power for themselves, for the sake of power, and become addicted to power. This play is a satire, featuring one such character. It is not based on any one MSP. Iona is an amalgam of characteristics, good and bad, that I have observed in a range of people, to differing degrees, across the political spectrum. No MSP has all her characteristics. But most of us MSPs if being honest (it happens) will, I think, recognise some aspect of their lives in her. Some events - and even individual lines - in the play are history, most are entirely made up. I also hope that the play serves as a reminder that politics is also about the humans who are politicians. Much of politics is about the daily minutiae of business, and the clashes of personality, and alliances, that grow on the back-benches, government and opposition.
