Oxford Philomusica archiveThe Oxford Philomusica has become one of the busiest regional professional orchestras in the country. Three invigorating string quartets feature in this performance, showcasing the outstanding interpretive skills of these wonderful musicians. Though grounded in classical tradition, Beethoven's String Quartet No. 4 looks forward to a new musical era, demonstrating his desire to experiment and innovate through the Quartet's lack of slow movement and consequent relentless energy. Ravel's ever popular String Quartet, awash with sensual melodies, exotic flair, and rhythms of a compelling vibrancy, is often considered his first masterpiece. Tripping along in a bright and carefree manner, Mozart's Divertimento in D major shows just how influential his travels to Italy were in shaping his compositional style.
