Long John Baldry archiveBorn John Baldry in London, January 1941. Fifties jazz and folk singer who later worked in Cyril Davies' R&B All-Stars. After Davies died, in 1964, Baldry assumed leadership of the group and renamed it The Hoochie Coochie Men, recruiting Rod Stewart as second singer. He and Stewart subsequently joined Steam Packet, after which Baldry began a solo career, with backing from Bluesology, a self-contained unit boasting Elton John on piano. Baldry scored three hit singles between 1967 and 1969, notable 'Let The Heartache Begin' (Number One in November 1967). He is now resident in Canada, where he still performs. In 1961, he helped organise Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated, a group that included Mick Jagger and Stones drummer Charlie Watts.
