Grass archiveEighteenth century poet John Clare was a man whose talent was matched only by his madness. Born in rural poverty in 1793, his early literary promise was overshadowed by encroaching mental illness, leading to 25 years of incarceration in institutions. In 1841 he escaped from an asylum in Epping Forest and made his way towards his native Northamptonshire on foot. This harrowing journey - by the end, Clare was reduced to eating grass - forms the basis of Simon Rae's radical one-man play.
