Company of the leading choreographer Shobana Jeyasingh. Phantasmaton celebrates the modern Britain with six highly skilled dancers, giving a potent sense of the excitement and edginess of urban life. Featuring dancers in sexually ambivalent costumes interacting with a classically dressed Indian performer on film, Phantasmaton debuted to national acclaim in spring 2002. In Hinterland, two live dancers on stage are joined by a third, filmed on a terrace overlooking Bangalore, challenging our ideas of space, time and place. This new work is inspired by our complicated cultural hinterlands, reflecting the diverse background and experiences of Shobana and the dancers. hInterland premiered in autumn 2002 at the place where time starts - the Greenwich meridian.
