St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra archiveProkofiev's lively Classical Symphony is not a pastiche, but how the composer felt that Haydn would have written a symphony had he been alive at the time. Tchaikovsky's piano concerto set the pattern for many future pieces with its dramatic confrontation between heroic soloist and eloquent orchestra. The piece has an expansive first movement, exquisite slow movement interrupted by a glittering scherzo, and a last movement which builds to a grand final melody. Seventy-five years after the memorable occasion upon which it gave the first performance of Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony, the orchestra remains unsurpassed in this highly emotional work.
