Our Ellen archiveFor half a century actress Ellen Terry was adored by critics, artists, royalty and theatre-goers alike. She was 'our Ellen' to her adoring public. She celebrated her acting jubilee in 1906 and that's where the play opens, thereafter going back in time to her first appearance on stage at age eight in The Winter's Tale, and chronicling her career, her three marriages, the progress of her two illegitimate children and her professional and personal partnership with the greatest actor of the age, Sir Henry Irving. The play captures the vulnerability, the struggle and the resilience of a woman at odds with Victorian morality.
