Ensemble 360 was formed in 2005 to take up residency in South Yorkshire succeeding The Lindsays who were retiring as a quartet. The ensemble brings together musicians from across the globe to form one versatile ensemble of eleven musicians; five wind players, a pianist, double bassist and the Elisas String Quartet. Ensemble 360 play a sequence of pieces that touch on the family background and musical experiences of one of the UK's favourite novelists, Marina Lewycka. During the concert, ensemble members will discuss with Marina the importance of her Ukrainian heritage and exchange thoughts on the nature of performing and listening to chamber music. Ranging across three centuries, the music in tonight's programme moves from the elegance of Bach to the liveliness of Poulenc's Trio, and the Romantic yearning of Chopin's early Piano Trio. Prokofiev's Five Melodies began as wordless songs for the Ukrainian soprano Nina Koshetz, but Prokofiev quickly made a virtuoso arrangement of them for the Polish violinist Paul Kochanski.
