Mozart & Bach - T0189587587Following their acclaimed performance of Mozart's Requiem in Autumn 2022, Armonico Consort return to Malvern with Mozart's other large-scale sacred music masterpiece: The Great Mass in C Minor. Written in 1784 Mozart had, at the time, immersed himself in the music of Bach and Handel and the work's big choruses and grand, 'operatic' solos reflect their influence. Also on the programme is Bach's celebrated setting of the Magnificat, which he composed for Christmas 1723. Amongst the most dramatic and beautiful settings of the text, Bach's multi-movement setting combines sublime solos with exciting and virtuosic choral writing.Director Christopher Monks.

T0370816760Armonico Consort had the privilege of being the first group to perform Vivaldi's Four Seasonswith Nicola Benedetti in 2005 at the Hampton COurt Palace Festival, shortly after she won the BBC Young Musician of the Year. Since then, Nicola's global career has blossomed as she becomes one of the greatest violinists in the world. For this performance, Nicola uses her new Baroque bow and will also substitute the strings on her 1717 Stradivarius (build 5 years before this work was written) with gut strings to create a perfect peiod instrument for the work. The Four Seasons is perfectly complimented by the rarely performed but brilliant Beatus Vir. A work similar in structure and vibrancy to Vivaldi's Gloria, it is packed full of joyous, serene and beautiful melodies, set to create a Valentine's concert like no other.Performer Nicola Benedetti. T01118921935Elgar's cantata The Spirit of England dates from 1917 and is one of his last works. Very different in mood from the Elgar of the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, the piece is the composer's horrified response to the suffering and misery of the First World War. It is a setting of three of Laurence Binyon's war poems: The Fourth of August, To Women and For the Fallen. In the second half or the concert, Armonico Consort and Orchestra perform Brahms's German-language setting of the Requiem, begun in 1865 when the composer was mourning the death of his mother.Conductor Christopher Monks.

Rachmaninov Vespers - T766143343Armonico Consort Soloists perform the deeply moving and reflective All-Night Vigil, an extraordinary collection of pieces set to liturgical text from the Russian Orthodox Church. As a composer better known for his large orchestral works and the virtuosity of his concertos, the Vespers, for a capella 12 part choir, is written in an astounding style which could itself be described as symphonic. Sublime melodies and intricate rhythms paired with the colourful Russian script have made the Vespers timelessly moving, with a truly unique style of choral writing. As the composer himself said, "Even in my wildest dreams I could not have imagined that I would write such a work".Director Christopher Monks.
