The Adventures of Prince Achmed
Clarinet virtuoso Arun Ghosh presents his original contemporary soundtrack to The Adventures of Prince Achmed by Lotte Reiniger. This pioneering silhouette film takes its inspiration from 1001 Arabian Nights with hypnotic and visually breathtaking imagery. Ghosh's revitalised score, (first written for clarinet, bass clarinet, double bass, vibraphone, cello and percussion), draws upon the cinematic orchestration styles of retro 70's blaxploitation, Bollywood melodrama, classic westerns and the infamous Hammer horror films, with elements of hip hop, jazz and Middle Eastern sounds. In performance, it is presented as a live action silhouette film featuring Arun Ghosh, an accompanying cast of musicians and their instruments all illuminated as shadows on screen. This 30th anniversary highlight will see our theatre transformed into a 'Bedouin Lounge' cinema, with lanterns, cushions and rugs whilst The Adventures of Prince Achmed is projected onto flowing drapes above and around the audience.
