T01972983959Explore music inspired by nature with the Basingstoke Symphony Orchestra. Grieg's Peer Gynt includes a famous depiction of sunrise as well as the sinister In the Hall of the Mountain King. Vaughan Williams's The Lark Ascending is one of the most popular of all English classics. Smetana's portrait of a great Czech river, Vltava, is one of a set of pieces that paint vivid pictures of his homeland. Finally, Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony is one of the great musical portraits of nature, imagining idyllic country scenes and a ferocious storm.Performer Rebecca Totterdell (violin). Wagner/Ravel/Sibelius - T01082163318The Basingstoke Symphony Orchestra welcomes acclaimed pianist Ivana Gavric, BBC Music Magazine's Newcomer of the Year in 2011, to play Ravel's sparkling Piano Concerto in G. Richard Wagner's groundbreaking operas are celebrated with extracts from his epic tale of unfulfilled love, Tristan und Isolde. 2013 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of its composer. Concluding this concert, the first of Jean Sibelius's seven dramatic and descriptive symphonies is as evocative of his great musical heroes as it is of the landscape and legends of his native Finland.Performer Ivana Gavric (piano). T1991719005From the opening virtuosic flourish, Grieg’s famous piano concerto is imbued with drama and lyricism as well as echoes of the composer’s native Norwegian folk music. Dvorak’s New World Symphony is one of the orchestral favourites. It was written during the composer’s stay in the United States in 1893. The programmatic Romeo and Juliet overture by Tchaikovsky focuses on three aspects of Shakespeare’s play: the saintly Friar Laurence, an agitated theme of the warring Capulet and Montague families, and a passionate love theme.Performer james Lisney (piano). T598339676Schumann’s opera is based on a medieval legend in which the love between a Duke and his wife Genoveva ultimately triumphs. Richard Strauss wrote his first horn concerto in 1883, for his father, a professional horn player. Angela Barnes is a former winner of the brass round in the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition and currently plays second horn in the London Symphony Orchestra. Stephen Scotchmer’s Fantasy is a voluptuous work for full symphony orchestra. Sibelius’s second symphony was written in 1901 while he was travelling in Italy and central Europe. The work is the most popular and most frequently recorded of Sibelius's symphonies. The violent Slavic gloom of the first symphony is replaced by a more classical touch and by the light and mood of the Mediterranean.Performer Angela Barnes. Conductor Stephen Scotchmer. | |
