Shakespeare in Music

CPO's new season opens with a programme celebrating the inspiration of Shakespeare on four great composers. Tchaikovsky provided one of his richest, most emotional scores for Hamlet. This contrasts with the lightness and sheer joy of Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream, including that famous wedding march. Sibelius' score for The Tempest opens with a dark brooding Prelude. The award-winning animator Virginia Head has animated this dramatic piece, with support from the Arts Council of Wales and her work will be shown at the concert on a big screen. Prokofiev's Romeo & Juliet ballet suite completes the programme and includes the music used as the theme for The Apprentice.
