A rare live concert by two giants of contemporary jazz. Bass maestro Haden and guitar hero Metheny have worked together in various small group settings over the years, but the 1997 Grammy Award-winning release of their duo recording "Beyond the Missouri Sky" brought out the essence of their association, with a series of delicately-wrought pieces that evoke the panoramic landscapes and open skies of their native Missouri. Haden is a pivotal figure in the music - he was a charter member of the ground-breaking Ornette Coleman Quartet of the late 50s, and his subsequent playing with Keith Jarrett, Don Cherry, Jan Garbarek as well as is own groups, Quartet West and Liberation Music Orchestra is distinguished by an unmistakably sonorous sound and melodic sophistication. Metheny returns to the UK to reveal a profoundly lyrical, contemplative side to his playing that both contrasts the electric fusion of his recent sold-out tour, and acts as a fitting reminder that he is amongst a select few artists whose approach is so completely personal that it transcends musical genres.
