Cristina Ortiz from Brazil first rose to international notice when she won the Van Cliburn Competition in 1969. She often champions music from her native land – notably the music of its foremost composer, Heitor Villa-Lobos, whose 50th anniversary falls eight days after the recital. Full of exotic harmonies and irresistible dancing rhythms, his music forms the second half of this recital alongside a selection of Debussy’s most popular solo piano pieces.
