BBC Music Magazine Newcomer of the Year 2010 and BBC New Generation Artists, the Elias Quartet’s reputation precedes them. Beethoven’s Op.74 quartet is heroic in sound, mirroring the style of his fifth symphony. Like most of Bartók’s music this short third quartet owes a great deal to folk melodies and is one of his most focused and structured pieces. Smetana was one of the first to write an autobiographical work. He wrote to a good friend saying "My intention was to paint a tone picture of my life".
