Production details
Britten wrote his Phantasy Quartet for oboe and strings while still a student; its concise design and spiky character combine youthful brilliance with striking individuality. Elgar's Andante and Allegro is another early work, composed around 1878, and originally entitled 'Xmas Music'. Beethoven's tribute to Mozart's Don Giovanni was written only five years after Mozart's death. The concert ends with a masterpiece from the end of Beethoven's career: a work of breathtaking innovation that has at its heart the vast ?Heilige Dankgesang', written during the composer's recovery from a near-fatal illness.
