Gilberto Gil - alongside his peer and contemporary Caetano Veloso - is one of the enduring heroes of Brazilian music. He combines the rhythms of his background in the north east of the country with a whole host of others - baiao and afoxe are joined with samba, bossa nova, rock, jazz, reggae, funk within music that is charged with Gil's commitments to social and political change. With Caetano Veloso, he created Tropicalism, the radical musical force of the 1960s that has had a deep and lasting impact on the evolution of Brazilian culture. Over the intervening years, Gil has become internationally renowned as one of the most significant singer/songwriters of his generation, performing with Stevie Wonder and Jimmy Cliff, as well as with fellow Brazilians Joao Gilberto, Jorge Ben Jor, Gal Costa and Maria Bethania. Gil returns to London with a new project inspired by the music of a personal hero, Bob Marley, a reflection of his interest in fusing the rhythms of Brazil with the Caribbean, and especially his fascination with reggae.
