The central composition of the recital is Britten's Temporal Variations, a favourite in the oboe repertoire as it allows a number of techniques to be showcased. Written at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War it may be about the inexorable slide to total war and has been described as ?a mixture of menace and gay abandon, beauty and the grotesque, seriousness and slapstick humour' (Eric Roseberry).
