American composer John Adams is a major focus of the new Great Performers and London Symphony Orchestra concert seasons from February until July 2010 when six of his works are performed. These include the European premiere of City Noir, a co-commission by the LSO and Los Angeles Philharmonic, a new production of his highly acclaimed Broadway style show, I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, and three other Adams premieres.

UK Premiere of Adams String Quartet - T01155794920

The John Adams focus continues with his String Quartet which was commissioned by the Juilliard School of Music for the St. Lawrence String Quartet. The work received its world premiere in January 2009 and will be performed for the first time in the UK by the Quartet at LSO St Luke's. Haydn's String Quartet in C major and Ravel's String Quartet in F major will also form the programme.

European Premiere of LSO Commission - T01600449443

The LSO’s second concert with the composer/conductor features the European premiere of City Noir, a work inspired by the ‘noir’ films of ‘40s and ‘50s Los Angeles. The work has been co-commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic (world premiere on 8 October 2009); London Symphony Orchestra (European premiere at Barbican on 11 March 2010), also in association with Cité de la Musique-Salle Pleyel (LSO performs French premiere on 16 March 2010); The Eduard van Beinum Foundation at the request of the ZaterdagMatinee, the Dutch Radio Concert Series in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam (performance in November 2010); and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. The programme on 11 March 2010 also includes Ravel’s Valses Nobles et Sentimentales, Debussy’s Préludes, orchestrated by Colin Matthews, and Stravinsky’s Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments with pianist Jeremy Denk.

John Adams conducts the Doctor Atomic Symphony - T388083566

John Adams himself conducts two concerts with the London Symphony Orchestra. The first includes the UK premiere of the revised version of Adams’s Doctor Atomic Symphony inspired by his acclaimed opera, Britten’s Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes and Sibelius’s Symphony No 6.

Emanuel Ax recital and Adams UK Premiere - T2131772059

The series continues with an Emanuel Ax recital which features the UK premiere of a John Adams solo piano work, written especially for Ax. Part of the Barbican’s Emanuel Ax Focus, the programme also includes Chopin’s Polonaise-Fantasie Op 61, Schumann’s Fantasie Op 17, Schumann’s Fantasiestücke, Chopin’s Andante Spianato, Grande Polonaise Op 22 and Four Mazurkas.

New York Philharmonic and Alan Gilbert - T1870544884

The series begins with the New York Philharmonic, music director Alan Gilbert and baritone Thomas Hampson performing The Wound-Dresser from 1989, Adams's setting of Walt Whitman's poem which Whitman wrote during the American Civil War. The programme also includes Haydn's Symphony No 49 'La Passione', Schubert's Symphony No 8 ‘Unfinished’ and Berg's Three Orchestral Pieces.
