Jerry Dammers' Spatial A.K.A Orchestra (NNF2012) - T01508364537A highly acclaimed tour, appearances on Jools Holland, at Glastonbury and The Barbican... now Jerry Dammers (founder of The Specials and 2 Tone) brings his twenty-piece orchestra to Norwich for the first time. Originally a tribute to space jazz maverick Sun Ra, the orchestra has expanded its repertoire, and on the 50th anniversary year of Jamaican independence, do not be surprised if some ska and reggae roots show through, or by updates of a couple of Dammers' own tunes, such as Ghost Town (now Ghost Planet). Legendary Jamaican trombonist Rico (who played with The Specials) will guest.Performer Zoe Rahman (piano). Performer Jason Yarde. Performer Denys Baptiste. Performer Nathaniel Facey. Jerry Dammers' Spatial A.K.A Orchestra - T1702326169Jerry Dammers, founder of Coventry’s The Specials and 2 Tone Records, writer of Ghost Town and Free Nelson Mandela, started his 19 piece orchestra as a 'tribute band' to space jazz maverick Sun Ra. Dammers has now expanded the repertoire, from Cedric 'Im' Brookes’ spiritual reggae, to Alice Coltrane’s eastern mysticism... from Tommy McCook’s deep jazzy ska, to Martin Denny’s dark exotica... and even to one or two versions of Dammers’ own songs. Some of the country’s best jazz musicians perform, with occasional vocalists, inside Dammers’ rhythmic setting, which draws on funk, reggae, rock, and recent styles such as hip hop, jungle or dubstep. The orchestra has received rave reviews from both jazz and rock/pop critics, in Dammers’ words, 'aimed at everyone'. It is vivid, visual and theatrical. | |
