Khyrkhaas: Music from the mountain-steppes of Khakassia, southern Siberia
T0
The master musician Sergei Charkov and his daughter, Julia, come together as Khyrkhaas to perform traditional songs, epics and melodies of their elders as well as their own compositions. Sergei excels at several overtone-singing and undertone-singing (khai) styles, including the gravelly tones used in epics to accompany the souls of the dead to the afterworld. He makes and plays all Khyrkhaas' instruments: 12-string chatkhan zither, 2-string yykh fiddle, 2-string khomus lute, syylas pipe and shaman dungur drum. Julia is the first female Khakas musician to dare to challenge the formerly male preserve of khai performance. Her hard edged voice complements her equally superb musicianship and dance. The group will be introduced by Ethnomusicologist, Carole Pegg. 'Khyrkhaas' will be holding workshops on the afternoons preceding the performances.
