Formed by virtuosi on the shakuhachi (bamboo flute) and koto (horizontal harp),
Kokoo have a unique slant on traditional Japanese music. The band adopts a healthy disregard for Japanese traditional music's often austere and conservative image. Influenced by maverick American composers John Cage and John Zorn as well as by improvised jazz, western classical music and rock,
Kokoo's music manages to evoke not only the mist-shrouded mountains and ancient mysticism of Japan, but also contemporary New York and Tokyo.
