Production details

Hearing the first and last of Beethoven's symphonies in the same concert vividly illustrates the composer's enormous development. The First Symphony was a conscious response to the symphonies of Mozart and Haydn, and Beethoven did not produce it until his reputation as one of the best pianists in Vienna was already secure. The Ninth Symphony, premiered twenty-four years later, had few precedents other than in Beethoven's own work. The emotional span crossed by its four movements is immense, ending with a jubilant vision of mankind linked in universal brotherhood.
