Louis Lortie’s recital opens the Chopin 200 celebrations within the International Piano Series this season, commemoratig 200 years since the birth of Chopin in 2010. The immensely respected French-Canadian virtuoso marks the anniversary with the composer’s complete Etudes for solo piano. Chopin’s studies stretch the pianist’s technique in every possible way, from the tumultuous figurations of the ‘Revolutionary’ Etude to the equally demanding layered textures of the songful Op.10 No.3 and the filigree delicacy of the ‘Butterfly’ Etude.
