Modified Toy Orchestra - New Sounds for Old Circuits and Blissbody: Humdrum archiveThe Modified Toy Orchestra is at the forefront of a worldwide underground movement called ?Circuit Bending . This involves rescuing children s once loved electronic toys from car boot sales and converting them into new, strange and wonderfully sophisticated musical instruments. Brian Duffy's Modified Toy Orchestra is an ongoing exploration of the surplus value inside the circuit design of abandoned electronic toys. He modifies and rewires these circuits adding switches and dials that allow him some control of the alien soundscape that the toys now produce, freed from the confines of their intended design. The sonic output of these modified toys is deeply unstable, often producing one-off sounds and phrases. Played live, this means chance must be embraced and the effects can be humorous, disturbing and inspiring.
