T1728665748The UK premiere of Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Nick Zinner's extraordinary 41 Strings. Performed to rave reviews in New York and at Sydney Opera House, and requiring 45 musicians to perform it, Nick Zinner composed 41 Strings in recognition of Earth Day. Joining Zinner on stage will be a host of talented guitarists including Romy Madley Croft (The XX), Gemma Thompson (Savages), Romeo Stodart (Magic Numbers), Lindsey Troy (Deap Vally), Jeff Wootton and Seye (Damon Albarn band). Zinner plays guitar and conducts the work - a four-part, classical piece featuring an army of electric and acoustic strings including guitars, violins, violas, cellos and bass, as well as three drummers and synths. Using the four seasons as inspiration, Zinner's music evokes the emotional experience and process of writing the piece, chronicling the ups and downs of the seasons in a swirling mass of strings and percussion - at times dark and moody, perhaps melancholic, sometimes hopeful and joyfully elated. Joining Zinner in 41 Strings' third only outing are friends and co-collaborators Hisham Akira Bharoocha (Soft Circle, The Boredoms), Ben Vida (Soft Circle), Brian Chase (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and string arranger Gillian Rivers. A selection of young players from Southbank Sinfonia and Goldsmiths, University of London, complete the string ensemble. Also on the bill is IIII, a composition originally written for drums and two synthesizers by Hisham Akira Bharoocha, Ben Vida, and Robert AA Lowe. In this London premiere performance they perform four rhythms based on the changing of the four seasons. | |
