R. Struass & Wolf - T01630176692

Having joined Sir Mark Elder and the Halle earlier this season for Elgar's Sea Pictures, mezzo-soprano Alice Coote returns for a recital with pianist Julius Drake. Her programme of German songs includes Strauss's Eight Poems from 'Letzte Blatter' - some of the very earliest and loveliest of the 200 or so songs he composed over his lifetime. Dedicated to his wife Pauline and a gift to her on their wedding day, the Op. 27 Lieder are also among Strauss's most heartfelt. For Wolf, inspiration came more from literature: poems by the gentle pastoralist Morike and the philosopher of emotion Goethe inspired him to some of his most expressive musical extremes. There will be no interval. Finish time approx. 14:00Performer Alice Coote (mezzo-soprano). Performer Julius Drake (piano).

One of Britain's most popular young violinists returns for the second of three appearances this season, performing mostly in the company of her regular chamber music partners. The programme begins with the many-voiced solo of Bach's Chaconne and concludes with Brahms's most dramatic and tightly argued piano trio, No. 3 in C minor, composed in 1886 while on a productive summer holiday in Switzerland. Britten/Bridge - T0505064584

The Aronowitz Ensemble, former BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists, explore Britten's musical relationship with his teacher, Frank Bridge. The Piano Variations, composed while Britten was still a student, looks forward to his celebrated Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge, that masterpiece for string orchestra to be performed later in the season. Today's concert begins with a striking composition from the young Britten in which the oboist is Nicholas Daniel, past winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition. Bridge's Piano Quintet comes from relatively early in his own career, before the events of the First World War cast a dark shadow on his creative outlook. Music 5: Llyr Williams - T2040011759

A recital of 'Baroque Reflections' devised by this remarkably accomplished former Radio 3 New Generation Artist and inspired by Brahms's magnificent homage to the music of anniversary composer Handel. Busoni and Mendelssohn reinvented Bach for their own times: Busoni by transcribing for the piano a selection of organ pieces, and Mendelssohn by breathing vivid new life into an archaic form in a turbulent Prelude and Fugue. Brahms worked on an even broader canvas with the music of Handel, transforming a theme from one of his keyboard suites and building to a glorious climax. Handel, that supreme man of the theatre, would have loved it! There will be no interval. Approx finish time: 14:00.Performer Llyr Williams (piano).
