The Halle Performs Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony - T01214351881Rachmaninov's The Bells opens this all-Russian programme from Sir Mark Elder and the Halle. Based on an Edgar Allan Poe poem, this magnificent choral symphony blends gothic drama with mystical intensity, haunted by the tolling of the Dies irae chant. Fear of death also lurks beneath the triumphant fanfares and jollity of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 - the composer's attempt to satisfy Stalin and the Soviet regime after his career-riskingly provocative opera The Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District.Performer Mane Galoyan (soprano). Performer Dmytro Popov (tenor). Performer Rodion Pogossov (baritone). Company BBC Symphony Chorus. Company Halle Choir. Company Halle. Conductor Mark Elder (Sir).

Sea Sketches with Andrew Manze and BBC Now - T01831507062'Behold, the sea itself...' Home to Sirens and storms, crashing waves and calming swells, the sea is at the centre of this atmospheric programme from Andrew Manze, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and joint BBC choruses. Vaughan Williams' expansive A Sea Symphony, with its arresting choral opening, is prefaced by sea pictures from two neglected 20th-century women composers now enjoying a revival. There's a filmic energy and vividness to Doreen Carwithen's Bishop Rock overture, while Grace Williams' Sea Sketches, inspired by her family home on the Welsh coast, captures the sea's vivacity and mercurial mood swings.Performer Elizabeth Llewellyn (soprano). Performer Andrew Foster-Williams (bass-baritone). Company BBC Symphony Chorus. Company BBC National Chorus of Wales. Company BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Conductor Andrew Manze.

Angelique Kidjo - T01929787909Described as ?the undisputed queen of African music', three-time Grammy Award-winner Ang?lique Kidjo makes her Proms debut with her nine-piece band in a late-night tribute to the celebrated salsa songstress Celia Cruz. Kidjo grew up in Benin, West Africa, listening to salsa and found Celia Cruz a huge inspiration. She later discovered that much of Cruz's music was inspired by Yoruba traditional songs that migrated from Benin to the Americas with the slave workers. Kidjo here reinvents these songs in the Afrobeat and juju styles of West Africa, reflecting their true origins.

Stravinsky, Debussy & Wagner - T126406906Sabine Devieilhe and Anna Stephany are the soloists in centenary composer Claude Debussy's Wagner-infused, mythical-fantasy cantata La damoiselle elue. Wagner's relationship with Paris soured over his opera Tannhauser but Stravinsky was practically adopted by the city. Tonight's second half features two of the latter's most colourful scores, whose striking resemblances result from the fact that Stravinsky broke off work on The Nightingale (the opera on which tonight's symphonic poem is based) in order to write his first ballet, The Firebird.Performer Sabine Devieilhe (soprano). Performer Anna Stephany (mezzo soprano). Company Halle Choir (female voices). Company Halle Youth Choir (female voices). Company Halle. Conductor Mark Elder.

City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra - T805900874The vigorous overture from Wagner's early, rarely staged epic set in medieval Rome opened the very first Prom 115 years ago. Here it raises the curtain on the second instalment of Paul Lewis's Beethoven piano concerto cycle – an infectiously lively adventure beyond the boundaries of Mozart into a style that was Beethoven's own. This visit by Birmingham's orchestra and its dynamic Latvian Music Director ends with Dvorak's musical response to the period he spent in America, during which he helped establish an American musical indentity, much as he had developed a nationalist school in his Czech homeland.Conductor Andris Nelsons.
