Cinematic drama stalks through a concert that opens with Bernard Herrmann's suite from his score for Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo and closes with Prokofiev's Third Symphony, a work heavy with bells, cymbals, sinister dances and flashes of bright musical moonlight. Meanwhile, piano superstar Daniil Trifonov is the soloist in the UK premiere of Grammy Award-winner Mason Bates's Piano Concerto. A musical journey through time, the work opens with Renaissance clarity of texture, moving through a richly Romantic slow movement to a sleek finale where jazz meets Minimalism. Spanish conductor Gustavo Gimeno leads the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
