And An Tobar: Folk Double Bill - T1696914193

TAT-1 by Aidan O'Rourke starts with the loose theme of bringing the world closer together. This new piece is inspired by the first transatlantic telephone cable (TAT-1), which ran from Oban (Aidan's home town) on the west coast of Scotland to Newfoundland. For many years this cable carried the 'hotline' between Washington and Moscow. Composer Sheema Mukherjee's piece Bending The Dark is written from the point of view of a second generation immigrant tracing the path of the Indian diaspora across continents. The new piece is performed by The Imagined Village, a band that unites some of England's finest traditional musicians alongside leading figures on the UK Asian and alternative electronica music scene.Performer Aidan O'Rourke. Performer TAT-1. Performer Sheema Mukherjee (Bendind the Dark).

Folk music is often referred to as the people’s music but it is sometimes perceived to belong to some people more than others. The Imagined Village takes the English songbook and opens it wide, inviting everyone to take up the music. In the last few years there has been an astonishing resurgence of interest in folk music coinciding with a new generation examining what it means to be English, through books such as Billy Bragg’s The Progressive Patriot.Performer Billy Bragg.
