The University Philharmonia opens the new academic year with a programme of richly colourful and varied orchestral works. Josef Suk s gorgeous Fantastic Scherzo is replete with attractive Czech folk tunes. Inspired by Bach s Brandenburg Concertos, Stravinsky s neoclassical ?Dumbarton Oaks earned its title from the Washington D.C. estate owned by the former diplomat who commissioned the work. A new composition by talented postgraduate student Alexander Kolassa receives its premiere, and the programme is completed with Rachmaninov s dazzling Symphonic Dances, his final composition which contrasts moods from May-time festivities, nostalgia for his Russian homeland, to the ultimate dance of death.
