Robeson Re-Explored - T1131921579

Sir Willard White explores the repertoire and life story of Paul Robeson, one of the major figures who raised awareness of equality and human rights in the mid-twentieth century, in a moving story. This new show features Neal Thornton who will lead a group of outstanding musicians including Guy Barker on trumpet and augmented by the Pavão String Quartet. Together they will bring orchestral textures to tailor-made arrangements of more popular songs from the Paul Robeson songbook. The programme includes Negro spirituals, British folk song, classic early jazz songs and the concert concludes with a rendition of 'Ol Man River'. With a captivating voice and wonderful stage presence, Willard White takes on the mantle of the legendary Paul Robeson with the quality of a master craftsman.

Willard White was born in Jamaica where he commenced his musical training at the Jamaican School of Music and then went on to the Juilliard School in New York. Willard White’s large repertoire includes the bass-baritone roles in operas by Bartok, Monteverdi, Handel, Mozart, Rossini, Verdi, Puccini, Wagner, Debussy, Shostakovich, Mussorgsky, Prokofiev and Gershwin. His regular concert appearances include working with London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic, Concertgebouw Orchestra, La Scala Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic and Cleveland Orchestras and he is much in demand as a recitalist. His tribute to Paul Robeson, performed with a small group of versatile musicians and linking narrator, continues to be a huge success at Festivals, has been shown on BBC television and has now been issued on CD.Performer Eugene Asti (piano).
