Woody Herman's place in the top ten great big band leaders is assured. Emphasising traditional big band virtues, combining powerful ensemble section work with top class soloists, he remained open to new influences, which added colour and freshness to the band's roots in blues and swing. Since his death the band has carried the tradition forward in fine style, under the leadership of Frank Tiberi.
