Born in Brighton, Yuri began piano lessons at the age of 4 years. In 1991 he began his studies at the Royal Academy of Music. Having given recitals throughout Europe, in Septemeber 1996 Yuri took up a place to study with Professor Vladimir Tropp at the Russian Gnessin Academy of Music.
