Alchemy brings to London the work of legendary Indian choreographer Chandralekha (1928-2006). An iconoclastic figure, often referred to as the founder of modern Indian Dance, she proclaimed the need for reintegrating the diverse Indian physical traditions and exploring new and contemporary directions for dance in India. In this performance, dancers Shaji John and Tishani Doshi perform her work 'Sharira' (2001), a duet for a male and a female dancer, exploring the complex idea of femininity. Using the Indian classical dance style Bharatanatyam, as well as yoga and the martial art Kalarippayyat, it is a modern celebration of the living body in which sensuality and spirituality co-exist. The music and song for this piece is interpreted live by the Gundecha brothers, acclaimed young exponents of Dhrupad music, one of the most ancient styles of Indian classical music.
