Did you know that for nearly three million years we were nomads? D-code is a new visual, dance theatre performance, questioning where we really come from. Having recently taken a DNA test in search of her ancestral origins, Karavan's results have divided her into quantitative percentages of various geographical locations. In exploration of the social and political implications of such divisions, D-code re-imagines our concepts of origins, migration and multiculturalism, searching to decipher the multiple identities that inhabit us and to decode the inner maps within our bodies. Responding to an increasingly multicultural world where a once stable identity of self through geographical location has become fractured, it directly addresses the biological, physical and cultural realities of fragmented nationalities and perceived boundaries of place. With the complexities that arise between globalization and the increasing tendencies of countries to restrict, defend and protect their geographical borders, this project aims to bring to light the importance of human commonalities and reassess how we decipher our identities, using the body as a map.
