Award-winning Kenyan dancer and choreographer Opiyo Okach presents an introduction into his work and dance development in East Africa. Opiyo works as a dancer, choreographer, teacher and cultural catalyst. Drawing from strong theatre practices as well as dance forms, the dance sector in East Africa developed differently from West Africa. Opiyo charts its genesis, the role of his work and his seminal productions, and his attempts to nurture a new generation of dance creators across the region through his pioneering series of 'Dance Encounters'. His talk provides insight into the cultural context of his work, its international presence and challenges. There will be time for asking questions and discussion.
