Itzik Galili, was born in Tel Aviv, but has been based in Groningen, Holland, with his own company since 1997. This is a choreographer of romance and contrasts: tenderness and cruelty, intellect and instinct are the extremes he uses to explore the human condition. In his piece Exile Within he bathes this exploration in an almost expressionist light. The performance is a coherent trilogy of dance, music and clever design of light and shadow, which places great demands on his six dancers and conjures up images that stay with you long afterwards. Galili’s movement language is extremely physical, even acrobatic, but still lightfooted, sensual, poetic and expressive, here accompanied by the enchanting music of Philip Glass and John Cage, and Damien Rice amongst others. In the space of 60 minutes, poetically close-textured scenes about rejection and closeness unfold, affording a perfect balance between powerful solos and touching duets and group sequences. Galili Dance does not only present strong emotions, it also stirs them up in its audience.
