Bluebeard's Castle/The Miraculous Mandarin
[Bartók]'s famous one-act opera,
Bluebeard's Castle received ecstatic reviews when sung in concert version in Glasgow last year by [Péter Fried] and [Andrea Meláth] and they will now repeat their performances in this fully-staged production. Strongly influenced by Hungarian folk music, this is a dark-hued study of a man whose soul is trapped in eternal loneliness unable to be freed, even by the love of his wife.
The Miraculous Mandarin was a collaboration between Bartók and the legendary, charismatic 20th Century choreographer Gyula Harangozó, founder of the Hungarian National Opera Ballet. This ballet, originally banned by the Hungarian authorities, tells a lurid tale of a Mandarin's desire for a young prostitute.
