Romeo and Juliet/On Motifs of Shakespeare - T2032194514Following the outstanding success of Mozart Dances which was co-commissioned by the Barbican for bite07, bite presents the European premiere of Romeo and Juliet, On Motifs of Shakespeare by Mark Morris Dance Group. This production, with new choreography by Mark Morris, is based on Sergei Prokofiev's original music and Soviet dramatist Sergei Radlov’s original story concept in which Juliet rouses from her potion-induced sleep and the lovers’ relief and joy is celebrated in a final dance. The original ballet was conceived in 1935 but was so heavily censored in Stalin’s Russia that it was nearly unrecognisable to its composer when it was first staged in 1940. For this historic event Prokofiev’s original score will be performed as he intended by the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Stefan Asbury. Romeo and Juliet, On Motifs of Shakespeare is presented in association with Dance Umbrella and is part of the Barbican’s Great Performers season and part of the LSO’s Dance! series which runs throughout November 2008 and January 2009.Producer BITE08. The Nutcracker with a Twist - The Hard Nut - T018448481With go-go boots, bouffant hairdos and dancing Barbies, this is a hilarious and deliciously vulgar take on the classic Christmas tale. Transposed to a kitsch 1960's home, where the Christmas tree is plastic, a yule log burns on the TV, the maid has attitude and the party guests do the bump, this is pop culture fantasy come to life. However this is not just pure spoof. Episodes of Noel naughtiness share the spotlight with the tender unfurling of childhood fantasies and first love. Snowflakes, reminiscent of a child's dream of winter, of ice-cream and snowballs, seem to dance in the sky. Featuring the 45-piece Royal Ballet Sinfonia, a chorus and full staging, this is a rare opportunity to see The Hard Nut. Due to its large scale, the show does not tour and has previously been seen in only four cities worldwide. Returning to T. A. Hoffmann's original story, and impeccably faithful to the complete Tchaikovsky score, The Hard Nut is at once a send up of the conventional Russian ballet but also a homage. So if you like you Holiday cheer with a twist, you'll love this.Choreographer Mark Morris. | |
