Cafe Muller/The Rite of Spring - T1391344490

Café Müller, created in 1978, is a profoundly personal piece and is one of only two works in which Bausch still performs. Inspired by childhood memories of watching mysterious adult relationships in her father’s café, six dancers express a range of inhibitions, frustrations and anxieties set against fragments of haunting Purcell music. The double bill is completed by Bausch’s acclaimed 1975 work Le Sacre du Printemps, or The Rite of Spring. Ritualistic and elemental, this adaptation of Stravinsky's masterpiece sees the dancers perform on a stage covered with peat, dancing to near exhaustion.Company Tanztheater Wuppertal.

Masurca Fogo - T0497065917

Widely known for her epic, bittersweet meditations on the human condition, Bausch presents Masurca Fogo an upbeat, joyous work of possibility and wonder. Commissioned by the Lisbon Expo in 1997, the piece unfolds on a rocky beach. Couples dance in slow moving lines within film images projected directly onto the stage. A series of Bausch's trademark vignettes unfold, depicting the danger and promise of love in an uncertain world: dancers in bathing suits shoot along a polythene waterslide, crowd into a beach hut as the ocean crashes wildly around them. Accompanied by a soundtrack as diverse as k.d. Lang, the Balenescu Quartet's re-invention of Kraftwerk and traditional African and Portuguese music, Masurca Fogo maintains Bausch's position as one of the most groundbreaking and innovative choreographers of our time.Director Pina Bausch.
