Contemporary dance. Richard Alston, Artistic Director of The Place, the UK's leading centre for contemporary dance, is internationally recognised as one of the most influential and inspiring choreographers in British dance. Following his most recent work, commissioned by Scottish Ballet to mark the Olympics, Martin Lawrance has created Madcap, a startlingly original new choreography with the music of New York band, Bang On A Can All-Stars. Shimmer is danced to the sun-drenched, live music of Ravel. Fashion designer Julian Macdonald's fabulous, jewel-encrusted cobweb costumes illuminate dazzling streaks of limpid choreography in a ravishingly beautiful piece of theatre. Richard Alston has revived his effervescent The Devil In The Detail, inspired by the music of ?King of Ragtime' Scott Joplin. Irresistible classics such as Maple Leaf Rag and The Entertainer are blended with the lightness and finesse of Alston's choreography.
