Contemporary dance. Richard Alston, Artistic Director of The Place, the UK's leading centre for contemporary dance, is internationally recognised as one of the most influential and inspiring choreographers in British dance. Richard Alston Dance Company return with an all-new programme of exhilarating dance and captivating music, in the company’s trademark fusion of movement and music. The songwriter Hoagy Carmichael recorded his own often witty lyrics in a low-key Southern drawl, a style he described as 'lazying'. In Shuffle It Right, the songs Richard Alston has chosen (including Riverboat Shuffle, Old Man Harlem and, of course, Star Dust) fairly scurry along with wry little licks and subtly punched out rhythm. It’s toe tapping, knee jiggling music which gets the whole company moving. Also in the programme are Alston’s Blow Over, set to the racing pace of Philip Glass’s Songs From Liquid Days, and The Men in My Life, a celebration of the remarkable work that Alston has made for male dancers, through choreography made for such outstanding dancers as Michael Clark, Darshan Singh Bhuller and Martin Lawrance, right up to the latest dances for Jonathan Goddard, nominated this year for the Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance.
