Richard Alston Dance Company - Upclose/In the Round archiveContemporary dance. Richard Alston, Artistic Director of The Place, the UK's leading centre for contemporary dance, is internationally recognised as one of the most influential and inspiring choreographers in British dance. The Upclose programme features brand new works by Richard Alston and Martin Lawrance. Martin Lawrance’s premiere checks out the Lie of the Land, dancers shifting sharply to the abrupt percussive bursts of Ryoji Ikeda. Alston’s new Even More explores the close contact and small signals that dancers use to stay in touch. Also in the programme to celebrate The Place’s 40th anniversary, Alston’s earliest existing work, Something to Do, created within a month of The Place opening in 1969. Light Flooding into Darkened Rooms, a duet made in 1997, is inspired by the paintings of Vermeer, the dance is accompanied by the quiet sensuality of 17th century lute music played live by James Woodrow.
