Vivarta and Howzaat!
Vivarta- Manifestations of Vishnu is the first performance of the night, this piece uses traditional bharatanatyam dance to explore the celebrated Hindu mythological theme of Dashavantara- the ten incarnations of Vishnu. Whenever the order of the world is destroyed, Vishnu returns to earth to intervene, restore righteousness and harmony. Each time he takes a different carnation in a variety of forms. In contrast, the second piece of the evening Howzaat! pushes the boundaries of contemporary bharatanatyam in a unique and refreshing display of dance, sport and popular culture. The piece incorporates a fusion of martial art from Kaaari, along with poses and movements taken from cricket players and there may even be a bit of breakdancing in there for extra measures. This double bill show showcases Sampradaya’s dancers’ keen artistry in this artistic medium of bharatanatyam as well as their willingness to try something different. However, the notion of bharatanatyam portrayed by Sampradaya has evolved into something very different from its origin in South India, when it was part of the daily ritual of temple dancers, a must see for any dance enthusiast!
