Presented by Chitra Sundaram in collaboration with Southbank Centre Artist in Residence Gauri Sharma Tripathi and following on from the success of last year's event, this informative, accessible and entertaining session investigates Indian classical dances with talks, performance and film from both British and international contributions. Indian classical dances have long graced the stages of modern theatres around the world but their antecedents come from a world apart, including temple ritual dances as well as refined, virtuoso performance in the courts of kings. These continued even into the British Raj of the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries.
