The Manchester Arts Education Festival 2000 takes on three projects this year, all based around the theme of EXILE. This theme will be explored through visual art and performance work, reflecting on Manchester as a multi-cultural city with its long history of immigration. The
Ashkenazi project focuses on one aspect of that history - the emigration of the Ashkenazi Jew from Shtetl life in Russian occupied Poland to life in present day Manchester. The second project,
Antigone, explores the experiences of the children of Oedipus, in particular, the two sisters, Antigone and Ismene. The third project
Memory and Identity uses the controversy surrounding Binjamin Wilkomirski's Holocaust experience of tow children in Switzerland. Twenty five schools and over 1000 students have taken part in the projects over the course of two terms.
