Vivian Ellis prize to encourage new writing for the musical stage - awarded annually. The Vivian Ellis Prize is supported by: the Performing Right Society, Stoll Moss Theatres, Warner/Chappell Music Limited, Rose-Morris and the King's Head Theatre. The Showcase for the 1997 Vivian Ellis Prize. Extracts from the five musicals chosen from the large number of entries submitted this year will be presented by a West End cast. Hugh Wooldridge directs, Kate Young is the Musical Director and Dan Crawford is the producer. After the presentation of the extracts there will be discussion by the judges of each entry in turn and then one overall winner will be chosen. The winner receive a cheque for £1,000 and a voucher from Warner/Chappell for £1,000 which can be exchanged for studio time. The judging panel was: Don Black, Nica Burns, Dan Crawford, Sheridan Morley, Sir Tim Rice, Jeremy Sams and Jonathan Simon.
