The festival begins with stars from the world of broadcasting and writing appearing throughout the ten-day festival including doctor and humourist Phil Hammond, festival president Melvyn Bragg, novelist A.L. Kennedy and stand-up comedian Mark Watson. The festival also brings figures from the world of politics to Keswick with Vince Cable, Rory Stewart, David Owen, Alan Johnson among those journeying up to the lakes. Political commentator Tariq Ali discusses the life and legacy of Lenin and George Monbiot examines the dominant ideology asking 'How Did We Get Into this Mess?'
